Anime Impulse came to the San Francisco Bay Area on July 29-30, 2023.
The Expo is an interesting mix of pop culture. Besides the anime expo, they also host K-Play, which is a K-Pop expo consisting of an artist alley and panels. And we can't forget about Sneaker Expo, which is where you go if you want to pick up a pair, or more, of sneakers.
There are a couple of reasons that I went to Anime Impulse. For one, I'm a fan. I've been a fan of cartoons and anime for as long as I can remember. But what was different for this expo is that it was one of the very first times that I did cosplay and took pictures. Officially, I first did cosplay at Anime Expo 2023 in Los Angeles. But this time I was determined to find other fans of same content that I cosplayed and take pics.
The cosplay comes from the TV and manga series Chainsaw Man by Tatsuki Fujimoto. Chainsaw Man is about a special Devil Hunter police force that is employed to hunt and kill devils who are born from people's fears and who ravage the cities of the world. My character is Kishibe. His main job is to train younger members of the police force to fight and destroy devils. Many of the younger members of the force have been killed by devils, and this has an important impact on the psyche of Kishibe. He tends towards cynicism, and he is an alcoholic. He takes it personally every time he loses a member to a devil, but he is determined to carry on nevertheless.
The one standing next to me is Denji in his transformed state. The thing about Denji is that he is part human and part devil, and he is also member of the Devil Hunter police force. When he is driven to a state of rage, that is when he takes his chainsaw form.
We can't talk about Denji without mentioning Power. The two work together, but whereas Denji is half human and half devil, Power is a full devil who takes a human form. It is Kishibe's job to train Power as well, and he generally trains the two together. In fact, he has been specifically called upon to do so.
I was fortunate enough to find all the members of the Chainsaw Man Devil Hunters special police force.
I mentioned above that one of the reasons I went to the expo was to celebrate the fandom.
But my other goal was more related to shameless self promotion. I went to hand out cards for the Slipshot. Whoever received one of the cards can scan the QR code, where they'll be taken to a web page. Here, they can enter their email address and they'll be able to participate in a drawing for a merch pack.
I'll be drawing and contacting the winner next week.
Anime Impulse was a blast for me. It's a time I won't soon forget.
